By the time he contacted Orion’s Attic, he and his girlfriend had already removed everything he intended to keep. In his mind, what remained was simply the leftover contents of the home.
But during our conversation, he explained why he chose us over other options.
“I’ve already moved everything I’m taking with me. There’s really nothing left of value, but I went on NextDoor to see what kind of companies may be out there to help with the rest.”
As he continued, he described what he had learned.
“I realized I was going to have to pay a company to take it away regardless. Someone recommended Orion’s Attic. They said you could find uses for much of the stuff other companies would just take to the landfill, so I’d rather hire you.”
That comment meant a great deal to us because it perfectly captures what Orion’s Attic is all about.
The Anti-Landfill Approach
Yes, we provide estate liquidation, downsizing assistance, and Silver Spring estate cleanout services. But we also invest significant time and effort into finding second lives for as many items as possible through donation, recycling, reuse, resale, and upcycling.
Truthfully, it would often be faster—and sometimes more profitable—to simply throw everything away.
But we’ve built Orion’s Attic to be the anti-landfill company.
We work hard to keep usable furniture, household goods, clothing, building materials, collectibles, and decorative items out of the waste stream and back into the community where they can continue serving a purpose.
This project turned out to be a perfect example of why that philosophy matters.
Vintage Posters and Other Unexpected Finds
Although the client believed there was little of interest remaining, we quickly discovered several items that deserved a closer look.
Among the most exciting finds were two striking vintage posters dating to the early twentieth century. One was a dramatic political poster titled “Landless,” while the other was a humanitarian fundraising poster urging support for women suffering in post-revolutionary Russia. Both pieces featured powerful artwork, strong visual appeal, and the kind of historical character that collectors often appreciate.
We also uncovered a well-loved horse saddle that should make a fantastic decorative piece in its next home, several vintage oil and gas signs, a handful of vintage Star Wars figures, and other items likely headed for auction rather than disposal.
What began as a project centered on keeping items out of the landfill was increasingly becoming a project focused on uncovering value that had gone unnoticed.
The Most Important Discovery
During the cleanout process, we found a ring the client didn’t even realize was still in the home.
Its monetary value was largely irrelevant.
Its sentimental value was enormous.
Like many people going through a move or downsizing project, the client had spent months making decisions, sorting belongings, and focusing on logistics. In the process, this small but important piece had slipped through the cracks.
Reuniting him with that ring became the most rewarding part of the entire project.
Every Home Has a Story
This Silver Spring cleanout serves as a reminder that it’s often worth taking a second look before assuming unwanted items have no value.
Sometimes those items turn out to be auction-worthy collectibles. Sometimes they’re perfect candidates for donation or reuse. And sometimes they reconnect someone with a piece of their own history.
In this case, one client’s desire to keep usable items out of the landfill led to the discovery of historic posters, collectible memorabilia, decorative pieces with a future life ahead of them, and a ring worth far more in sentimental value than dollars.
That’s why we do what we do.
Every home has a story. Sometimes you just have to look a little closer to find it.
