Finding cash during estate cleanouts is more common than many people
We even found money hidden between cassette tapes.
realize. Over the years, we’ve found hidden money in homes throughout Potomac, Rockville, Silver Spring, and across the Washington DC region.
Clients often ask what happens if valuables are discovered during the estate liquidation process. The answer is simple: we immediately return those items to the homeowner, family, or personal representative.
And yes — we know where to look.
People from older generations, especially those who lived through the Depression or simply distrusted banks, often hid cash throughout the home. During estate liquidation and home cleanout projects, we’ve found money:
- inside freezers,
- taped inside closet door frames,
- hidden in the pages of books,
- tucked into shoeboxes,
- inside pantyhose and underwear drawers,
- underneath mattresses,
- and one hiding place we’ll never forget: underneath the buttocks of a blowup sex doll.
Apparently someone believed even inflatable companions deserved emergency cash reserves. At Orion’s Attic, we don’t judge. You be you.
But jokes aside, this is actually an important trust issue for families hiring an estate liquidation company. Clients are often turning over access to an entire lifetime of possessions, and they want to know what happens if valuables are discovered during the process.
Our policy is straightforward:
“During the course of our work, if items of potential significant value (such as jewelry, coins, precious metals, or similar objects) are discovered that were not previously identified, those items will be set aside and brought to the attention of the homeowner or personal representative before any sale or disposition occurs.”
That includes cash.
In fact, some families specifically hire us because they know we’re thorough. We actively look for hidden valuables while clearing homes because we understand that executors and family members are often overwhelmed, grieving, rushed, or simply unaware of where things may have been stored.
The short video above shows a small real-world example of how this works during one of our projects. Sometimes it’s a few dollars in a drawer. Sometimes it’s far more significant.
Either way, our approach stays the same: If it belongs to the client, it goes back to the client.
