This Just In: Shaker Chairs, Hope Chest, Global Goodies

Dec 1, 2015

More great finds are coming into Orion’s Attic each day and our December schedule for estate liquidations and estate sales in Maryland and Northern Virginia is going to be exciting, too. A few highlights: Shaker Chairs/Hope Chest/Global Goodies: We found four near mint condition Shaker chairs from Mt. Lebanon, New York that were passed down through a family now residing in Virginia. The three adult chairs and one child’s/doll/salesman sample chair are for sale at Old Glory Antique Marketplace in our booth D-6. All four chairs have been holiday discounted from the initial sticker price we had on them when we took the photos. We have some other great pieces of furniture there, too. You’ve got to see our Burmese hope chest brought back to the U.S. by a career-long foreign service worker. We also added...

A “beary” good day of picking in Silver Spring MD and beyond...

Oct 15, 2014

Won-ok and I got up early on a recent Saturday and pounded the streets in our Silver Spring, Maryland neighborhood during a community- wide yard sale. We’re always on the prowl for great stuff to buy and sell and it’s not often that we get to do so in our own back yard. The first dozen sales we visited tanked. Nothing there for us. We hit pay dirt on the next stop, catching a former foreign correspondent for a newspaper (yes, that job used to exist) just as he was setting up. He was late to the party and it worked out perfectly for us. We had a pocket full of cash we were itching to spend. He had a bunch of stuff he brought home from around the globe that he wanted to...

The joy of being wrong — you never know what’s behind the next door...

Mar 15, 2014

I hit the ground running on a recent morning, knocking out a little marketing from the ol’ home office and then dashing across the Maryland line to a moving sale in Northwest, D.C. I was excited, my picking engines roaring and my pockets full of cash. The family running the sale had announced it on a neighborhood list serve — hyped it up good and said only people from the neighborhood would be allowed in on the first day. Awesome. The fact that I am almost always wrong about what I think I’ll find on a buying run — how good or bad it will be — had already faded from my mind. This had to be a good sale, right? I make it through the door first. The place was a mess. It...

Saving Money at Estate Sales Tip 1: Be Nice!

Aug 26, 2013

There are a lot of simple ways to save money at Orion’s Attic estate sales. We have compiled our favorite eight tips and share them with you here, one at a time. We’ll publish the list as a whole when we’re done so you can pin these reminders to your fridge and save some bucks the next time you join us at an estate sale. Drum roll please … here’s Tip No. 1. 1. Be kind.
