This Just In: “R.E. Lee, A Biography” Pulitzer Prize Edition 1936...

Mar 14, 2015

General Robert E. Lee was a complex man. A hero to many, a villain to others, it takes a hefty tome to get your arms around the man. Famed journalist and historian Douglas Southall Freeman did such a good job of writing one that he earned the Pulitzer Prize for it — “R. E. Lee, A Biography.” We’re offering this four-volume set, “The Pulitzer Prize Edition,” published by Charles Scribner’s Sons in 1936. This handsome set is bound with gray boards with a gilt profile of Lee on each of the covers. This set aimed at both the serious reader of Civil War history and people who also enjoy displaying the beauty of old books in their homes. Visit the Orion’s Attic eBay store and enter the Books department to find this excellent set....

This Just In: Rainbow of carnival glass shines on our eBay store

Mar 6, 2015

We jumped at the chance to purchase this collection of vintage carnival glass from a client in Alexandria, Virginia, who won’t have space to display it in his new home. We picked up more than 40 pieces in all and began placing them for sale in our OrionsAttic eBay store on March 6, 2015. See the Decorative Glass section to soak it all in. We hope to have the whole collection up within a few more days, including some Depression glass that came with it. My personal favorite so far is the L.E. Smith teal green carnival glass bowl. I’m not quite sure why that one grabs me. Maybe the color reminds me of the day I spent in Florida with my sister Heather, when I confronted my life-long fear of water by attaching...

This Just In: Extraordinary book of poetry by Vermont poet Ella Warner Fisher in 1933...

Feb 22, 2015

“The New Sketch Book: An Anthology of Voices” by Vermont poet Ella Warner Fisher published by The Excelsior Press in Shelburne, Vermont is the next of a number of extraordinary books by Vermont authors in the first half of the 20th century that we discovered recently. See this book and others in our OrionsAttic eBay store and stay tuned for more. We were astonished not only to find the books here in Maryland but that the books are written with exceptional skill and are in equally excellent condition. We found the books in the bottom of a box we bought at an auction in Morganza, Maryland. We haven’t yet been able to learn much about Fisher, who also authored “Idylls of Champlain,” “Green Mountain Echoes,” and “Castles of Memory.” She identifies herself as a “Writer...

This Just In: Antique oil on canvas paintings and prints

Feb 15, 2015

We’ve just added five great pieces of art to our new-look Orion’s Attic eBay store. Peruse a range of pieces from a harvest scene to a American Revolution navy battle. Highlights include: Harvest scene of woman calling out — oil on canvas, signed, late 1800s to early 1900s: We love this piece and have been lucky to find a number of excellent paintings lately. This one leaves us with more questions than answers, makes us want to transport ourselves into the scene to figure out with certainty what’s happening. There is so much drama in this petite work that measures 11.5 inches wide by 9.5 inches tall to the outside of the frame. At the most basic level, this painting features a harvest scene of a woman standing next to a wheat stack. She is...

Trying to do a little good before Christmas

Dec 31, 2014

An old man who appeared to me to be homeless showed up at the end of an Upscale Yard Sale we were running at Pyramic Atlantic Art Center in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland before Christmas. He didn’t beg for money. He didn’t ask for anything. Something just spoke to me and told me to help the guy somehow. “I’m trying to get with a lady tonight,” Gregory said in a voice as gravelly as the edge of the parking lot we were working on. “I’d like to bring her a little something.” An idea struck me as I looked around at the antiques and collectibles my girlfriend Won-ok and I make a living selling. I saw a bunch of small, inexpensive items that I was about to pack up. “Would you like to make...
