Old baseball photos launch trip down memory lane

Feb 10, 2016

I can’t help but get a little nostalgic every time I run into baseball memorabilia from yesteryear. I’m transported back to Atlanta Fulton-County Stadium, where I watched baseball’s real home run king, Hank Aaron, swat balls out of the park. I was six years old then. I sat breathless in the same stadium at age nine when Atlanta Braves’ reliever Gene Garber struck out Pete Rose and stopped his consecutive games hitting streak at 44. The six old five-inch by seven-inch black and white photographs of baseball players from the 1930s and 1940s we just turned up is what punched my ticket to my latest stroll down memory lane. I stumbled across them in a random box of old photographs we bought from a woman who inherited the stuff. The American League Service Bureau...

This Just In: Shaker Chairs, Hope Chest, Global Goodies

Dec 1, 2015

More great finds are coming into Orion’s Attic each day and our December schedule for estate liquidations and estate sales in Maryland and Northern Virginia is going to be exciting, too. A few highlights: Shaker Chairs/Hope Chest/Global Goodies: We found four near mint condition Shaker chairs from Mt. Lebanon, New York that were passed down through a family now residing in Virginia. The three adult chairs and one child’s/doll/salesman sample chair are for sale at Old Glory Antique Marketplace in our booth D-6. All four chairs have been holiday discounted from the initial sticker price we had on them when we took the photos. We have some other great pieces of furniture there, too. You’ve got to see our Burmese hope chest brought back to the U.S. by a career-long foreign service worker. We also added...

Orion’s Attic surprises seller with $2,000 bonus!

Oct 20, 2015

Won-ok Kim and I knocked on the door of a very sweet woman from whom we had purchased countless pieces of costume jewelry and a few knickknacks a few weeks earlier. She was surprised to see Orion’s Attic back at her front door. But not nearly as surprised as she would be moments later. What she didn’t know was that an unexpected treasure had turned up in our bulk buy. We didn’t think anything of the piece at the time as we only saw it for a few seconds while filling up a box with all the stuff we were buying. It was just a vintage cigarette box and a matching lighter that we figured we’d sell for maybe $40 – a needle in a haystack of items we bought that day. There’s simply...

Just In: USS Rochester ship newspaper 1930-1933

Aug 13, 2015

We found an extraordinary five-volume bound set of the official newspaper of the United States Ship “The Rochester” that span from Aug. 23, 1930 to March 25, 1933. The collection was originally compiled by the ship newspaper’s editor, W.H. Humphrey, whose family we have been working with. There are three volumes of “The Rocky” bound in green boards and two in brown. Some issues are duplicates but the set of five tells the full story of the lives of the men and the mission of the ship. This is truly an exceptional find that should be of tremendous interest to military collectors, historians, descendants of the U.S.S. Rochester and anyone with a love for the U.S. Navy. We have thoroughly enjoyed reading the set and are now making them available for others to love....
